Beyond Meetspace is a research collective interested in the future of work and play beyond the limitations of physical space. Thus far, work has been centered on the various roles of virtual reality (VR). We are presently funded by an NSF Future of Work grant to identify the role VR can play in hybrid and remote work for video game developers.

This project seeks to increase workers' well-being (e.g., reduced virtual meeting fatigue) and equity (e.g., equal speaking contributions) by conducting a diverse mixed-method analysis of remote work and VR usage.

Role: CO-Principal Investigator

Meaningful XR is a conference and community with roots in the Meaningful Play conference, hosted at Michigan State University (MSU) since 2008, The SPARTIE Labat MSU, and the NSF-funded Beyond Meet Space project team. Meaningful XR is dedicated to exploring and theorizing about Extended Reality Spaces. The inaugural event (MXR24) was in collaboration with the MSU's Department of Media & Information, Stanford's Department of Communication, Professor Jeremy Bailenson and his Virtual Human Interaction Lab, and the Journal of Media Psychology.

The Social and Psychological Approaches to Research on Technology - Interaction Effects (SPARTIE) Lab is part of the College of Communication Arts & Sciences at Michigan State University (MSU). The SPARTIE Lab conducts empirical research, produces "edutaining" media, and pursues service initiatives related to meaningful effects of human-technology interactions.

Role: Non-MSU Collaborator

The ICA Games Studies Division (GSD) welcomes research from multiple disciplines that investigate human communication related to games in some capacity, including the study of games themselves as well as communication phenomena associated with games. Topically, in addition to (video/digital) games, the scope includes many forms of advanced media experiences (e.g. virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality) and simulations. Disciplinarily, the GSD fosters intersections between communication and media studies, cultural studies, social sciences, computer sciences, design, cognitive sciences, engineering, education, health studies, and information technology studies.
